Protaras, Cyprus — Destination Guide

Discover holiday villas in Protaras, Cyprus. Famous for Fig Tree Bay, crystal-clear waters, and family-friendly beaches.

Protaras is the crown jewel of Cyprus's eastern coast — home to Fig Tree Bay (regularly voted one of Europe's best beaches), turquoise water, golden sand and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere that's a world away from the nightlife of nearby Ayia Napa.

The resort centres around a gently curving bay lined with restaurants, beach bars and water sports facilities. Behind the seafront, quiet residential streets give way to our hand-picked collection of private villas, most within easy walking or cycling distance of the sea.

Protaras is ideal for families with young children, couples who want beach relaxation, and multi-generational groups wanting comfort and convenience. The pace is calm, the sea is safe and shallow along most of the coast, and the evenings are spent at waterfront tavernas rather than nightclubs.

Best time to visit Protaras

Protaras has a long season from April to October. July and August are peak — sea temperatures reach 27°C, beaches are busiest and prices are highest. May, June, September and October offer warm sunshine, far fewer crowds, lower villa prices and sea temperatures still above 22°C. Spring (April–May) is particularly beautiful with wildflowers across Cape Greco.

Frequently Asked Questions about Protaras

Is Protaras good for families?

Absolutely. Protaras is widely considered the best family resort in Cyprus — calm, shallow beaches, a relaxed atmosphere, excellent restaurants and a good selection of child-friendly attractions including the Ocean Aquarium and Magic Dancing Waters.

How does Protaras compare to Ayia Napa?

Protaras is quieter, more family-oriented and less focused on nightlife. It's about 10 minutes north of Ayia Napa. Both share access to the same world-class beaches and sea, but Protaras has a calmer, more residential feel.

What is Fig Tree Bay like?

Fig Tree Bay is a wide, gently curved beach with exceptionally calm, clear water — one of the safest swimming beaches in the Mediterranean. The sand is golden and soft, the water is shallow for a long way out, and there are good facilities including sunbeds, showers and beachside restaurants.

Do I need a car in Protaras?

Not strictly — many guests walk everywhere from their villa. But a hire car opens up day trips to Cape Greco, Larnaca, Nicosia and the Troodos mountains, and makes beach-hopping much easier.

What is the water temperature in Protaras?

The sea warms to around 25–27°C in July and August, and stays above 22°C from June through October. Even in April and May it's typically 20–21°C — fresh but swimmable for most.
